EAST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN

Abraço

An East Village espresso counter with Lisbon manners and a cult-favorite olive oil cake.

Abraço started as a sliver of an espresso counter on East 7th Street and grew into a slightly larger room without losing the thing that made it matter: coffee treated seriously and served without ceremony. The espresso is pulled with real care, and the small case of baked things — the olive oil cake has a devoted following — is made in-house.

There is more standing than sitting, and that is part of the point. Regulars drink at the counter, talk to the staff, and move on. It is an espresso-bar culture closer to Lisbon or Rome than to laptop-café Manhattan, which is exactly why the neighborhood protects it.

Editor’s tip

Have the espresso standing at the counter with a slice of olive oil cake — that is the whole ritual, and it is enough.
