GREENWICH VILLAGE, MANHATTAN
Dante
A 1915 Village caffè reborn as a world-class Negroni bar that never lost its neighborhood manners.
Dante opened as an Italian caffè in 1915 and spent a century as a neighborhood fixture before its 2015 revival turned it into one of the most decorated cocktail bars in the world. The award shelf is real — it has been named the world's best bar — but the room itself stays modest: white tile, café chairs, Campari bottles lined along the wall, and a crowd that skews happy rather than scene-y.
The Negroni is the thing here, served in more variations than seems reasonable and all of them good. Afternoons are gentler than nights; an aperitivo at the marble bar while the Village drifts past the open windows is one of downtown's most reliable pleasures.
Editor’s tip
Go at aperitivo hour on a weekday and sit at the bar — the Negroni flights are the best way in.
