MIDTOWN, MANHATTAN

Le Bernardin

Eric Ripert's hushed Midtown seafood temple — four decades at the top of the rankings.

Le Bernardin has spent four decades proving that the quietest room in Midtown can also be the most ambitious. Maguy Le Coze brought the restaurant from Paris in 1986, and under chef Eric Ripert it has stayed fixed at or near the top of nearly every global ranking since — a seafood restaurant of almost monastic focus, where the fish is the point and everything else is in service of it.

The dining room is hushed and formal without being cold: soft light, a vast ocean painting along one wall, service that reads the table. Tasting menus move from raw to barely touched to lightly cooked, and the progression is the argument. This is the city's definitive special-occasion seafood dinner; book well ahead, dress for it, and let the kitchen set the pace.

Editor’s tip

If the dining room is booked out, the lounge serves at a gentler threshold — same kitchen, no less occasion.
