WEST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN
Grove Court
Six brick houses around a locked garden — the Village's best view through a gate.
Halfway down Grove Street, between Bedford and Hudson, an iron gate interrupts the row of houses, and behind it sits a pocket of brick rowhouses from the 1850s arranged around a private garden — a courtyard the street forgot to tell you about. Built originally as workingmen's housing wedged behind the finer Grove Street homes, Grove Court has since become some of the most quietly coveted real estate in the Village.
The court is private and the gate stays locked, so this is a through-the-bars pleasure — which is honestly part of it. Frame the view: six matched brick facades, shutters, a tree or two, and a hush that feels borrowed from another century. Around you, Grove Street itself is one of the Village's prettiest blocks, so the detour never feels wasted.
Editor’s tip
The famous twisting corner of Grove and Bedford is thirty seconds east — do the court, the corner, and Commerce Street as one short loop.
