Los Tacos No. 1 (Chelsea Market)
The standing-room Chelsea Market taco counter that started it all — adobada first, chairs never.
The original Los Tacos No. 1 is a standing-room taco counter inside Chelsea Market, opened in 2013 by friends from Tijuana and Southern California who wanted the tacos of home made the same way here: tortillas pressed to order, meat cut from the trompo, no chairs, no apologies. The line looks alarming and moves fast.
Order the adobada — the chile-marinated pork off the spit — on a flour tortilla with everything, then eat it at the rail with the market crowd flowing past. The company has grown into locations across Manhattan, but the Chelsea Market stand is where the whole thing started, and it still feels like the best fifteen minutes you can spend under Ninth Avenue.
Editor’s tip
Go mid-afternoon on a weekday, order the adobada, and add a cucumber-lime agua fresca — then walk it off on the High Line upstairs.
Make an evening of it — beautiful stops nearby
