Little Island stands in the Hudson on 132 concrete 'tulips' — planters on stilts, each a different height, so the whole 2.4-acre park rolls like terrain rather than sitting flat like a pier. Opened in 2021 on the bones of the storm-wrecked Pier 54, it packs in lawns, overlooks, winding paths, and an amphitheater facing the water, all planted densely enough that the city disappears behind leaves within twenty steps of the gangway.
The design rewards wandering: every path climbs to a different view — downtown and the harbor from the southwest corner, the midtown skyline from the northeast rise. In summer the amphitheater runs a full season of music and performance, much of it free or cheap. Even on an ordinary Tuesday, watching the water traffic from the top of a concrete tulip is a reasonable use of an hour.
Editor’s tip
Take the southern path up first — most people drift north, and you'll have the harbor overlook to yourself for a few minutes.
